"Helaas is het vandaag een flink stuk kouder dan gisteren, toen het buiten heerlijk toeven was in het lentezonnetje. Maar eigenlijk maakt het ook niet veel uit, want al vanaf 's middags valt er binnen genoeg te beleven. De eerste band die voor vandaag op het programma staat, is het Amerikaanse Botanist. Dit gezelschap is zelfs voor Roadburn-begrippen een vreemde eend in de bijt. Want hoe vaak komt het voor dat een blackmetalband met zelfgemaakte instrumenten over de heerschappij van planten zingt? Zo'n optreden kan maar twee kanten uit gaan: óf het wordt helemaal niets, óf het blijkt verrassend goed. Botanist blijkt verrassend goed. De wollige deken aan klanken heeft meer met blackgaze dan met black metal te maken en herinnert vaag aan bands als Alcest, An Autumn For Crippled Children en - onvermijdelijk qua thematiek - Wolves In The Throne Room. Maar tegelijkertijd klinkt geen van deze bands zo apart als Botanist. Mede dankzij de zelfgemaakte instrumenten zet deze band een heel bijzonder geluid neer en weten de vreemde botanisten steeds meer publiek aan zich te binden." -- Rik, Metalfan.nl, May 16, 2015

"'Botanist, wat is dat voor band?' Ik zeg 'dat is een soort van plantaardige black (green) metal met elektrische hakkeborden in plaats van gitaren'. Ik moet zeggen dat het gezicht van diegene nóg verontwaardigder keek dan daarvoor. Plantaardig? Hakkebord? Jazeker. Alle vijf getooid in een groene plantenoutfit bespelen de heren achtereenvolgens drums, basgitaar, twee keer een 'hammered dulcimer', oftewel 'hakkebord' in traditioneel Nederlands, en de zanger bespeelt ook nog een klein harmonium als een soort tonale onderlaag. De 'dulcimers' zorgen voor de ijzige gitaarsound, waarbij de tonen erg lang doorresoneren. Ja, dit is nogal vreemd, ook omdat de composities erg onorthodox in elkaar zitten en omdat de nummers soms plotseling afgelopen kunnen zijn. Maar toch blijf ik geboeid kijken en luisteren. Natuurlijk is het een bijzonder shouwspel, maar ook muzikaal is er best veel te beleven eigenlijk. Naast de composities zijn ook de harmonieën anders dan anders en toch heeft het ook zijn pakkende momenten en is er genoeg afwisseling om de hele show te blijven boeien.
